Design for the full lifecycle

Before you choose a material, ask: how long will this unit actually stay in this form? If the brand will refresh every three years, build fixtures that can be reclad or relocated. If the unit is a permanent flagship, invest in materials that age well.

• ✓Use mechanical fixings rather than adhesives where possible
• ✓Leave service access so lighting and electrics can be repaired
• ✓Design for standard material sheet sizes to reduce offcut waste
• ✓Specify finishes that can be re-sanded or re-lacquered

Choose durable over disposable

The cheapest laminate counter may look good on day one, but if it is replaced twice in ten years it is more expensive and wasteful than a solid timber or solid surface counter that lasts. Durability is the greenest choice.

Reduce waste during manufacture

A large part of a fit-out's environmental footprint is created in the workshop, not on site. Nesting parts efficiently, recycling offcuts, and keeping designs in standard sheet sizes all cut waste before the van leaves.

Design for disassembly and relocation

Shopping centre leases end. Brands move. Kiosks change location. If the joinery is glued and screwed into a single permanent mass, it goes to landfill. If it is built as a kit of parts, it can be moved, adapted, or reused on the next project.
