If you are specifying a counter for a retail, hospitality, or commercial space, you will face a fundamental choice early in the process: solid surface (Corian or similar) or high-pressure laminate. Both are valid options. The right choice depends on your budget, your expected footfall, and how long you need the counter to perform.
Here is an honest comparison.
What Is Solid Surface?
Solid surface materials — most commonly marketed under the Corian brand name — are acrylic-based composites that can be fabricated into almost any shape, with invisible joins and a seamless finish. They are non-porous, hygienic, repairable, and available in a very wide range of colours and textures.
What Is High-Pressure Laminate?
High-pressure laminate (HPL) is a paper-based composite material bonded under high pressure and heat, typically applied to a substrate like MDF. It is significantly cheaper than solid surface, comes in a huge range of finishes, and when properly specified and fitted, performs well in commercial environments.
The Honest Comparison
Durability: Solid surface wins. Scratches can be sanded out. Chips can be repaired. With proper maintenance, a solid surface counter will last for decades in a high-footfall environment. Laminate, once chipped or worn, typically needs replacing.
Aesthetics: Solid surface wins for premium applications. The seamless joins, the depth of colour, and the tactile quality are genuinely superior. However, modern laminate finishes — particularly textured and matte options — can be very convincing at lower price points.
Hygiene: Solid surface wins. Non-porous and seamless, it is the preferred choice for food service, healthcare, and any environment where hygiene is critical.
Cost: Laminate wins significantly. Expect to pay two to four times more for solid surface fabrication than for a comparable laminate counter. For budget-constrained projects, laminate is a legitimate choice if properly specified.
Repairability: Solid surface wins. Laminate cannot be repaired once damaged — it must be replaced. Solid surface can be sanded, buffed, and restored.
Our Recommendation
For any high-footfall, long-term, or premium environment: specify solid surface. The performance and longevity justify the cost over the life of the fit-out.
For shorter-term installations, pop-ups, or budget-constrained projects: a properly specified HPL counter from a quality fabricator will perform well and look excellent.
